The Cape Province of North (Noord-Kaap in Afrikaans and Northern Cape in English) is located northwest of
South Africa ,
it is the largest province by area but also the least populated.
The province is divided into five districts divided into 27 municipalitées:
- Namakwa
- Pixley ka Seme
- Siyanda
- Frances Baards
- John Talo Gaetsewe
Its capital is
Kimberley,
and is located in Eastern province.
Mainly those that characterize the Northern Cape is its vineyards, irrigated by the Orange River, near
Upington.

But also some unusual landscapes such as the Kalahari desert or
Augrabies Falls .

The province of Northern Cape has just over one million inhabitants, with a densitée of 2.8 persons / km², it is the least populated province of South Africa.

The Northern Cape has four official languages.
Inhabitants speak mainly Afrikaans (approx 60%), and Twana (34%).
The other languages of the province are the Xhosa and English, but there are minority languages like Sotho.
80 percent of the population is black or colored, and some tribes living in the Kalahari San north of the province, mainly along the Orange River and the Vaal River.
The Northern Cape is bordered by West by the Atlantic Ocean.
South and east, it shares a border with the province of
Free State ,
the Eastern Cape ,
the Western Cape
and the Province of North-West .
While in the north it is bordered by Namibia and Botswana.
The northern province is the Kalahari Desert, characterized by red sand dunes and dry acacia savannah.
South and Southeast of the province consists of a mountainous landscape, with an altitude ranging from 1200 to 1900 meters.
The central areas are generally flat with salt marshes. The west coast is dominated by the Namaqualand region, famous for its spring flowers.
In conclusion, the province is mainly semi-desert, the Karoo.
Semi-desert to desert consists mainly of sedimentary rocks, with a main river called Orange.

The Northern Cape is mainly semi-desert and desert with annual precipitation so rare, ranging from 20 to 400mm / year (rainfall generally increases from west to east).
This great province dry temperature fluctuations and topography variables by region.
To the west the rainfall is rather in winter, while in the east they take place during the storms of late summer.
Winters are generally cold and clear, with the south becoming very cold sometimes, as in Sutherland.
Sutherland in the Karoo is one of the coldest cities in South Africa, there is often snow with temperatures sometimes below -10°C.
Summertime, many areas experience extreme heat, with temperatures hottest in South Africa.
In January (austral summer), the temperature range of 34-40°C in the afternoon, but the nights are cold dew and frost bringing complementing the low rainfall in the province.
In the spring, from July to October, Namaqualand is covered with beautiful wild flowers giving it a Breathtaking scenery.
Record: 47.8° C recorded in 1939 near the Orange River.

VI. The cities of Northern Cape
The Northern Cape Province has two cities with populations greater than 50,000 inhabitants.
Kimberley ,
the capital of the province and
Upington.
It's two cities are also the only possessors an airport big enough and serving other cities in South Africa, like Johannesburg or Cape Town.
- Springbok :
With 10,000 inhabitants, Springbok is the largest city in Namaqualand. The main attractions for visitors are the Goegap Nature Reserve, the Namaqua Nationnal Park and a little further north the famous Richtersveld Transfrontier Park.
- De Aar :
Imposing city of 46,000 inhabitants, De Aar is on the line of railway from the Cape in Kimberley.

- Colesberg :
City of 17,000 inhabitants located on the main road between Johannesburg and Cape Town.
If you drive here, you will discover a good number of museums, monuments and memorials.
- Kuruman
is a medium sized city with about 12,000 inhabitants. The city is best known for his "Eye of Kuruman", the largest natural water source known to the Southern Hemisphere.
- Prieska : City of 8500 inhabitants located in the East Central Province, on the banks of the Orange River.
Some attractions such as "Die Bos Nature Reserve", hiking or visiting the Museum are feasables Prieska.
- Hanover :
Small town of 1500 inhabitants located in the southeast of the province.
- Alexander bay : Town of 1500 inhabitants, the most northerly located along the west coast of South Africa but also the driest.
- Calvinia :
City of 8500 inhabitants located at the foot of the mountain in the heart of Green Hantam Karoo in Namaqualand.

Richtersveld National Park *
Created in 1991, the Richtersveld National Park is located northwest of the province, in Namaqualand. The landscape is rugged and hostile.
This region is home to a people of shepherds, the Nama. They live a simple life in this rigorous framework.
The Richtersveld NP is popular with 4x4 enthusiasts and nature lovers.

The Augrabies Falls National Park is located on the Orange River in South Africa, north of the Northern Cape.
In lunar framework, the main waterfall is about 60 meters high.
Adventure activities like rafting, hiking, biking and canoeing are popular.

Namaqua National Park *
Located northwest of the province, the park is known worldwide for its spectacular spring flower arrangements.
Approximately 100,000 tourists visit every year Namaqualand. 65% of these visitors are in South Africa and 35% come from other countries.
The park comprennt 5 km of scenic routes, hiking trails in nature, places to picnic, and an information center for visitors.
The park is also equipped cottage to spend the night.

Mokala National Park *
The Mokala National Park is located southwest of Kimberley. The park is 26,485 hectares and has 70 km of roads.
The main objective of the park is to protect endangered species such as Cape Buffalo, Black Rhino and Sable Antelope.
The landscape consists of open plains, sand dunes and arid grasslands luxurious.
The main activities are the game drives and bird watching.

Vaalbos National Park
Reason for the land claim Vaalbos National Park no longer exists.
The Vaalbos NP is located in the Karoo, along the Vaal River near Kimberley.
The park there was especially famous for its wild animals, like the rhino, buffalo, eland, hartebeest red.

Tankwa Karoo National Park
Tankwa the Karoo NP is surrounded by mountain ranges and giant Cederberg Escarpment Roggerveld.
No formal installation is available on the park, but the keeping of birds and mammals is facilitated.

Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park *
Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park comprises Kalahari Gemsbok National Park and the Gemsbok National Park in Botswana.
With an area of more than two million hectares, it is one of the biggest areas of nature conservation in southern Africa.

Witsand Nature Reserve
Located about two hundred kilometers east of Upington, the Witsand Nature Reserve teems with birds of all kinds as the Pygmy Falcon, the smallest bird of prey in Africa. This reserve is home to 3300 hectares, an amazing curiositée, dunes measuring 20 to 60 meters high.
Hiking, 4x4, bike, picnic and accommodations are offered.

Goegap Nature Reserve
Just 15km east of Springbok, this reserve offers travelers get the possibility of observed fauna and flora of the region.
On a hiking trail 7 km you will encounter over 600 species of wildflowers and plants, 100 species of birds and 45 species of mammals such as Zebra, Oryx, Springbok.
The reserve is open every day between 8 and 16.

Oorlogskloof Nature Reserve
The Oorlogskloof Nature Reserve is located 16 km south of Nieuwoudtville, surrounded by mountains and canyon.
The reserve has two main hiking trails for a couple of days (4 or 5), and two other daily travel.
The hike can be difficult sometimes but the landscapes are all beauties.

Nieuwoudtville WildFlower Reserve
Located a few kilometers north of Nieuwoudtville, the reserve is home to the floral Nieuwoudtville world's highest concentration of geophytes.
The reserve is visited especially after the first rains in April / May
Great Drives pluseurs of days are also possible.

Tswalu Kalahari Reserve
The Tswalu Kalahari Reserve is proximitée the town of Kuruman.
Tswalu covers 100,000 hectares, and is the largest private hunting reserve in South Africa.
The reserve is home to over 230 bird species and 70 mammal species.
Safaris motorized or on foot, here are the main activities reserve.

Big Hole
Close to Kimberley, the "Big Hole" is still the main attraction for visitors to this region.
The cavity famous five hundred meters wide that is located at a depth of around 240m was dug with shovels and picks by diamond miners.
It is known to be the largest man-made excavation in the world.

Wonderwerk Cave
Not too far from Kuruman, lies the cave Wonderwerk. A breeding ground for archaeologists and enthusiasts, the area also includes precious objects, fossils and San rock art.

Pella Mission
Pella Mission is truly in the middle of nowhere, about 150 km from Springbok.
Pella has a remarkable cathedral, yellow that was built by French missionaries in the late 1880s.
