It has an area of 129 825km² and its capital Bloemfontein.

The Free State is divided into five districts divided into 20 local municipalities.
On the most common languages spoken are Sotho (64.4%), Afrikaans (11.9%), followed by Xhosa, Tswana and the Zulu.
With 21 inhabitants/km² and a total population of nearly 6,276,000 inhabitants, the Free State is to the Northern Cape which the lowest density of South Africa.

Golden Gate Highlands National Park
This National Park near the border with Lesotho, was founded in 1963, covers an area of 343km², the park is known for its sandstone cliffs and the caves dressed San rock paintings.
Golden Gate Highlands National Park is also famous for its fauna and flora, the park is also a place for reintroduction of the "Big Five".

Gariep Dam Nature Reserve
The reserve is situated between Colesberg Colesberg and Bloemfontein, it is an ideal base for the weekend or for a stopover if you go to Cape Town from Johannesburg.
Nature of the subject Gariep Dam spans 36,487 hectares, located on the Orange river, this reserve is ideal for aquatic attractions for wildlife watching.

Tussen Die Riviere Nature Reserve is located at the confluence of the Caledon River and Orange river.

Free State National Botanical Garden
This botanical garden is located on the outskirts of Bloemfontein, an area of 70 hectares, its fauna and flora are exeptionnelles.
The Free State National Botanical Garden hosts nearly 400 different species of plants and trees, about 125 species of birds and 50 species of mammals.
The ideal time to visit this garden is between November and March, but the garden is open all year round between 8:00 and 18:00.
A small entrance fee is required to visitors.

Willem Pretorius Game Reserve
Willem Pretorius Game Reserve covers 12,000 hectares and is located in the heart of the Free State Province.
Between plain and hilly rocky crests, the observation of game and birds are not the only attraction of the reserve.
